About Mental Space
SON:
Hey! Have you been in Thailand lately?
I wanted to ask you something—I instinctively felt you might know about this.
So, I’ve been attending some body-movement workshops lately, with ritual-like activities—group trembling, vocalizations, and everyone can shift between being a leader or follower. After three sessions, I noticed a pattern: when there are over five people, intense focus and altered breathing trigger synesthesia. When I close my eyes, colors shift, spaces emerge—it’s wild! The first time, I saw abstract grassy waves rolling with the music; the second, a spiraling “sun hole” like a navel; today, it was a sapphire-blue pentagon. Even weirder, I could “observe” these visuals as if detached—turning my head showed things behind me, beyond imagination. It’s not just imagery; it’s another dimension.
I’ve mentioned it to others, but they don’t quite get it. I even sketched a mind map trying to process it. What’s happening? These endogenous images must have a mechanism, right? It feels tied to breath, not just meditation!)
孙:
Hi!
SUN:
Hi Yiyang! So glad to hear from you.
Mechanically, this isn’t too complex: your visual cortex doesn’t require external stimuli to activate. Sensory deprivation—like dark retreats—often triggers vivid inner visuals (people even see full “light worlds” after days in darkness, needing anchors to stay sane). Float tanks can blur reality’s edges too. Your ritual-induced trance is fascinating—collective movement, rhythm, sound, and a relaxed-yet-alert state align with shamanic practices.
SON:
Maybe it’s because I’ve been isolated lately—working on animations alone, days without speaking, feeling my body dissolve. Plus, winter here means 3-hour daylight… now recovering slowly.
“Relaxed yet alert”—that’s the key!
SUN:
Another note: your strong visual aptitude (maybe linked to animation work) amplifies this. While mechanics explain it, an animistic framework might feel safer or more complete—this could involve possession or interaction with external forces/spirits. It raises questions: What is the “self”? What’s being penetrated or influenced?
Anyway, stay cautious. Interrogating your boundaries is wise—we don’t want random forces hijacking you, right?
